THE PRELIMINARIES
Before anyone puts a finger on the planchette, there are words of welcome and formality to be carried out. Obviously, you can make your own up but I have included what we do at the bottom of this text to help you.
These form the opening of the contact and in effect, makes the Circle
OPEN and live.
As with opening, the closing is structured in a similar way. The importance of
CLOSING WHAT HAS BEEN OPENED CANNOT BE OVERSTATED.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
All sitters put a finger on the planchette. It will then start to move around your board. It might come to each person as a sort of nudge by way of a hello. It might go to the word "hello" on your board. It may go straight to a sitter. It might go in a circle around the whole display simply looking at the set up. That also happens if you get a new sitter, an as yet unknown Soul on your board. Occasionally you get a very excited Spirit, in which case, assuming they have the power, the planchette will zoom from letter to letter on the board.
The original character of the sender in life is often illustrated by the way they respond on your board to the opportunity to be able to contact you. When you get a contact, it is polite to give them a spoken 'welcome to the Board' as you would when welcoming a friend.
So now your Circle is working.
ONE HOUR
You have one hour, so whoever is your leader should try to keep things rolling on. In other words silence is simply lost opportunity.
If you don't know who is coming through, then ask ('do we know you?', 'who is the message for?'), normal questions you might ask at any time.
If you want to know something particular, then form your question carefully. Do not ask a question which in fact is two questions: 'does Gillian need to study harder or is she OK?' for example. If you can ask a closed question, i.e one with either "yes" or "no" as the answer. However, think through how you would stand if the answer, unexpectedly was "no". Be ready with a follow-up, such as 'are you suggesting I don't mention it to him?'. It is what I call Forensic questioning.
You need to remember that often the Soul you are conversing with may have passed years ago and the things which concern us now in our mortal life will seem trivial to the Soul.
Rarely, the planchette won't move in response to a question. This generally means that it does not want to answer for whatever reason.
There will be a reason for that but you won't know or could only guess.
If questions to do with money come up, they can be viewed by Spirit as mercenary or beyond gracing it with and answer. Money does not exist in the Spirit world. If you persist, you might well get a wrong answer.
I hope this gives you some idea of what is normal in a sitting.
