NEW MEMBERS
Should you wish to bring in a new member in to a Circle, make sure, in advance that all members agree with the decision. There is no point bringing in known 'trouble makers'.
When you intend to bring in a new member it is a good idea to ASK the Board on the preceding Circle if they are happy to bring a new body into your group. Whether you do this or not is up to you, HOWEVER, when the new member attends their first Circle, seat them as an observer outside the circle and ask the board if you can include this new member. That is a simple courtesy to the Board.
Obviously, if for some unknown reason the planchette moves to 'No' you cannot include that person. Spirit knows everything and might full well know of matters not known to you. I have never found this, but it can happen.
Normally the planchette, if it has not already sped over to where the new member is seated to welcome them, will move or possibly spell the name of the newcomer in welcome. Then the newcomer can move in to the circle and might well get the first message.
It is sensible to brief the newcomer. They might have been used to all sorts of ideas and procedure that other people use in another Circle, or, perhaps has read about Circles in a general way but does not have any real idea at all of what to expect.

VARIOUS ACTIONS
Some of those things others might use in their Circle: the use of music chanting or singing, using singing bowls, particular 'introductions', silent time, prayers and so on.
One psychic I spoke with, for example, was horrified that I did not light a candle every time (I don't ever). Every Circle might be slightly different but each one must be safely run, some are not.
Water does play a part in Spiritualism, you should make sure that all those sitting in the Circle have a glass of water to take if they wish.

VIBRATIONS AND BAD SPIRITS
As the Spirit world exists at a higher vibration than here on Earth, it is good to try to 'close the gap', singing or music of course will raise the vibration of the group and assist your connection, striking, or using a 'singing bowl' will clear the area around you and help Spirit to connect. All these things are helpful, assisting in the atmosphere of the Circle and raising good vibration with which to help the contact.
During a session, rarely, the planchette might really slow down. In effect it is telling you that the vibration level to join both parties is struggling. I have found that striking the Singing Bowl will immediately restore good connection having cleared the area.

RUNNING THE CIRCLE
I have listed and included what I use to 'open' my Circle. It works very well for me. Others of course will use their own way. Whatever you do, and how you do it, IT IS VITAL that you ask for protection. That is SO IMPORTANT.
Always respect Spirit and their effort in making a contact with you. Think of it as opening a door and letting yourself into a spirit-built house. That allows you to have contact. Because you have asked for protection, in your introduction, unwanted bad Spirits cannot enter with you.
It is also important to remember that the main purpose of the Circle is to receive messages which our friends on the other side of life are waiting to give us. Not run a discussion group. This is where discipline and control comes in.
Quite often a message will generate a large response. Members start to discuss what a message means or some memory is recalled. This can result in a lot of crossing conversation, whilst it might all be very interesting it is a loss of communicating time and must be controlled. While all the discussion is going on the loved ones above must be frustrated! They have come to give messages not watch a discussion group.
Normally a Circle will last for one hour before the 'power' fades. If there is a medium there they might well tell you the power is going and as a Circle member it might also be wearing them down. They will know when the power has withdrawn.
